OUR ZONE

Santanyi is a small Majorcan town which leads its own tranquil existence away from the lively areas elsewhere of the island. Located on the far south eastern tip of Mallorca, Santanyi has a population of 3379 (2008). While not excessive by any means, this number lends itself to an active community in what is otherwise a peaceful part of rural Mallorca.

Surprisingly, the municipality itself is not among the smallest on the island with a moderate total land area of 124 km2. The towns of s’Alqueria Blanca, Calonge and Cala d’Or are of a similar size.

Its municipal population of only 12,303 people and population density of just 98 people per square km is indicative of a sparsely populated region where much of Mallorca’s natural appeal remains intact.

Thankfully, the wave of mass commercialization that has swept across Mallorca in recent decades has left most of Santanyi untouched, so visitors can expect the town to be isolated from all the hustle and bustle that exists elsewhere. This is certainly the case in terms of travelling to and from the town. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Santanyi is not overly popular with travel guide operators, and therefore those that do wish to stay here will need to make their own travel arrangements. The journey is relatively simple, and unlike many other airport transfers, it can be made on a single motorway. This makes the 50km distance appear quite insignificant. From the airport all you need to do is take the MA-19 which leads straight to Santanyi via the towns of Llucmajor and Campos.

However, it should be noted that access to nearby towns and villages is by minor roads. This may cause confusion and uncertainty even to the most confident of drivers so we recommend studying the area in advance!

The inclusion of foreign residents in local census counts has lead to further population increases. It is not hard to see what attracts them. The surrounding countryside is home to a wide range of sites set amongst pleasant scenery, friendly locals and warm sunshine.

Favorite attractions include the parish church of san Andres and the old town hall. Both are open for you to explore at your own leisure and they each contain fascinating artifacts from times gone by and provide interesting insights into the town’s history.

Not much further afield, the nearby “Parc Natural de Mondrago” is a natural park covering 785 hectares of Mallorcan rural countryside. Home to a wide range of wildlife, visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the landscape on one of the wide variety of trails, either by foot or bicycle. If you are travelling with children, you will undoubtedly love the clean, sandy beaches in the park which stretch along the far eastern coastline.

If relaxation is what you are looking for then a visit to Santanyi could be for you. Hidden away in the heart of rural Mallorca, the slow pace of life here is sure to provide you with a relaxing and refreshing break from the stresses of everyday life. You are bound to be captivated by the Santanyi’s rich and cultural heritage.
